It has been a busy year at DB Marine Services! From launching our first 2406 Kingcat in February, to Selling on the Legendary Z-Craft, to launching our very our KAOS900!
It has indeed been chaos and here follows the belated blog!
This particular boat is to be a commercial line fishing boat like no other! With over 300% buoyancy and a beam of 3.8m this 30ft monohull is fishing machine!
After cleaning and polishing the mold, comes the gel coat. Read more about gel coat here!
Boat building is more than just fiberglass and resin in a bucket. You also need to understand the chemical and physical adhesion between the different materials. Long story short: plan your lay up carefully so that your gelcoat and first three layers of CSM can be done within a few days.
The original mold is 32ft long, but for this particular application we needed a vessel under 9 meters. After careful measuring and engineering, the full transom was fixed and fibreglassed into place.
Since there was no top deck mold for a vessel this size, we designed and innovated a completely original half cabin. This is definitely one of a kind! We used the original Z-Craft Hard Top Mold, and the Z-Craft Forward Console Mold as the backbone of the design. The side panels of the hard top were especially designed to allow airflow while spending days at sea. The cabin was mocked up with flat panel lycell sheets. The lycell ensures that the cabin is strong enough to stand on and keep it light!
After what seemed an eternity of sanding and faring, we were finally ready for paint. Keeping in mind that this isn't a show boat, and we were in a hurry, the boat was brush painted!
The half cabin, as it has been dubbed, has complete wrap around clears custom manufactured locally, to protect the skipper and crew from the elements. This half cabin, with its 360 degree views, eliminates the biggest con of a cabin boat- the humidity and lack of air circulation- while still providing adequate protection!
The original design intended for either a single or twin diesel engine propulsion, however these two 150hp E-Tecs were on hand. With limited time, the decision was not too difficult- Outboards it is! A secondary 2cyl diesel engine provides adequate 12v charging for all the house needs: high pressure water hoses, 360 Degree night time spotlights and Freezers for all the fish!
For long passages and extended offshore fishing, the vessel holds 1.8 Ton fuel! The purpose-built deck layout includes six fully insulated storage hatches for ice, fish, bait or
25 liter jerrycans. Furthermore, the two central fully insulated built-in hatches provide an additional 8.5 Tonnes of stowage!
As proud Lowrance agents, the boat is fully Lowrance Fitted! Boasting an HDS Chartplotter and Autopilot, and Link 6 VHF, as well as a stand alone fishfinder with a powerful in-hull transducer, the creatures of the briny deep will be no match for these fishermen! Of course, there is also a sound system fitted, with Lowrance Speakers, to keep the crew sane!
All things being equal, a big cabin was a prerequisite! It has to be big enough to store the entire crew's kit and caboodle as well as all the boat equipment. A nap nook is also needed, for extended periods at sea!
Lock, stock and barrel this is a commercial boat. It is strong, durable and a diamond in the rough! No luxuries, or creatures comforts here to be found on this work boat!
